Behind The Vines

Rutherford Grill: Highway 29’s Hidden Appetite Stop
After a day exploring the legendary wineries of Napa Valley, perhaps a hillside tasting in Oakville or a cellar experience in St. Helena, your appetite shifts. It wants something substantial and unfussy. It wants something a little smoky, perhaps. You want food cooked with care rather than showmanship. Enter Rutherford Grill, quietly holding down its post just off Highway 29 with confident, consistent food and no need for frills.
You won’t find this place on a tasting map or in the middle of downtown buzz. That’s the point. And why it remains one of our top dining recommendations at Squire Livery for guests looking to end their wine country experience with something honest, satisfying, and deeply local.
A Valley Staple That Locals Actually Eat At
Located in the small town of Rutherford with a population of just over 552, this restaurant has stood the test of time. There are no reservations, no inflated wait times, and no need to decode the menu. It is simply food that does what food is supposed to do. It tastes great and leaves you full in all the right ways. The service is fast, the setting is warm, and the staff knows how to move. They don’t try to impress because they prefer to deliver.
A Menu That’s Familiar, But Better
Just a few of our favorites off of their menu.

Knife & Fork Barbecue Ribs
Slow-cooked with Texas Hill Country BBQ sauce, served with coleslaw and French fries
These ribs aren’t for display they’re for devouring. The sauce is thick and smoky with the right blend of heat and sweetness. The meat is tender enough to yield to your fork, and the classic sides (or a swapped-in house salad if you’re like me) round it out without overcomplicating things. They arrive hot, glazed, and as satisfying as anything you’ll find on a grill this side of Austin.

Hawaiian USDA Prime Rib-Eye
A Prime-grade steak marinated with a whisper of tropical sweetness, seared hard and served with seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes, and roasted corn. Rich, flavorful, and exactly what you want after a day of lighter fare. Napa wine-friendly, without trying to be.
Prime Rib French Dip Sandwich
For years, their prime rib dinner was legendary. Though it’s no longer on the menu, the Prime Rib French Dip Sandwich carries the torch with slow-roasted tenderness and au jus that’s worth soaking your hands for.
Rotisserie Chicken
Simple in theory, exceptional in execution. Perfectly crisped skin, moist interior, and seasoning that doesn’t compete it complements. You’d be hard-pressed to make it this well at home.
Dessert That Doesn’t Apologize

Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich
Despite the name, there’s not a crumbled cookie in sight. Instead, thick rounds of vanilla ice cream are rolled in dark chocolate cookie dust and set into a warm, rich chocolate sauce. Whipped cream finishes it off. It’s balanced, clean, and rich without tipping into excess.

Key Lime Pie
Bright, bold, and sharp in all the right ways. A smooth citrus filling over a crisp graham cracker crust, topped with real whipped cream not the kind from a can. If you’ve tried ten kinds of key lime pie, this might become your new benchmark.
